Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and the aviation sector have incurred a staggering financial loss of over PKR 450 billion due to ongoing travel restrictions.

Over the past four and a half years, PIA alone has faced a loss of approximately PKR 220 billion, while the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has suffered a loss of around PKR 250 billion due to restrictions on European routes, as reported by sources from the Privatisation Commission.

However, the potential restoration of European routes is expected to play a crucial role in PIA, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s future. According to the Privatisation Commission, the reopening of European routes could pave the way for the quick restoration of routes to the UK as well.

Discussions are underway to assess the potential reopening of PIA’s routes to the UK, with sources indicating that efforts are being made to restore these routes before the airline’s privatization. Negotiations under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement for the sale of PIA are also reportedly in progress.

The revival of international routes is seen as a critical factor in improving PIA’s financial health and supporting its privatisation process, with an emphasis on restoring key international destinations like the UK and Europe.
