PM Shehbaz Orders Urgent Reforms to Expand Low-Cost Loans for Small Farmers

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed immediate reforms to make low-cost agricultural loans more accessible for small and medium farmers.
He stressed that easier access to credit is vital for boosting farm productivity and ensuring rural economic dignity. During a high-level meeting, he called small farmers the backbone of the nation.
PM Shehbaz emphasised that small-scale farmers face major challenges in securing affordable loans. He said the government must treat farmers with respect and provide financial support on easier terms.
Expanding low-interest loans is now a top priority for the administration, especially for those who struggle with high borrowing costs.
The Prime Minister ordered fast-track reforms at Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) to improve services for farmers.
He also urged private banks to play a stronger role by offering agricultural loans on concessional terms. PM Shehbaz announced he will personally review progress every three weeks to ensure reform goals are met on time.
Officials briefed the Prime Minister about ZTBL’s current performance and shared new strategies to improve agri-loan disbursement. The meeting also examined how private banks can increase support for the agriculture sector.
The discussions focused on financial inclusion, credit expansion, and institutional backing for small farmers.
Key cabinet members and top officials attended the meeting, including ministers, advisors, the State Bank Governor, and MNAs. PM Shehbaz reaffirmed his government’s full commitment to empowering small farmers through practical reforms and better access to resources.
