Pneumonia Cases Surge Among Children Due to Dry Winter and Viral Infections

Pneumonia cases among children have risen to alarming levels due to dry winter conditions and widespread viral infections, raising serious concerns among parents and healthcare professionals.
Over the past seven days, more than 3,000 cases of pneumonia have been reported in children across five major government hospitals in the city.
According to hospital data, 920 pneumonia cases were recorded at the Children’s Hospital, over 700 cases at Services Hospital’s pediatric ward, and more than 610 cases at Mayo Hospital’s children ward within a week.
Jinnah Hospital reported over 450 pediatric pneumonia cases, while several more cases were also diagnosed at Ganga Ram Hospital and General Hospital.

Medical experts describe pneumonia as a common yet potentially life-threatening disease in children, caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and easily transmissible among young patients.
The World Health Organization reports that pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of death among children under five globally, accounting for a significant percentage of child mortality each year.
Doctors advise parents to seek immediate medical attention if children show symptoms such as high fever, breathing difficulty, persistent cough, or lethargy, and stress the importance of preventive care during the winter season.
