Poliovirus detected in sewage samples across four Pakistani districts

ISLAMABAD: The wild poliovirus has been detected in sewage samples from four districts, including Tando Allah Yar, Khairpur, Tando Muhammad Khan, and Lakki Marwat, raising concerns about the ongoing challenges in Pakistan’s fight against polio.
Environmental testing conducted in December 2024 confirmed the presence of the wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in these districts. The detection of the virus underscores the continued risk posed by polio, even as the country remains focused on its eradication efforts.
In 2024, Pakistan reported 73 cases of polio, highlighting the persistent struggle against the disease. The confirmation of the virus in environmental samples reinforces the need for heightened vigilance and effective vaccination campaigns to prevent further transmission.
The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH) also recently confirmed the detection of the WPV1 case in the country. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation and stress the importance of continued efforts to eliminate the virus.
