Karachi: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sindh General Secretary and Special Assistant to the Chief Minister, Waqar Mehdi, has been elected as Senator from Sindh in a seat left vacant following the death of Senator Taj Haider.
According to Sindh Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chauhan, Waqar Mehdi secured 111 votes, defeating his opponent Nighat Mirza of MQM-P, who received 36 votes. Two ballots were rejected due to incorrect markings.
This marks Mehdi’s return to the Senate, where he previously served as a member. His election is being seen as a reaffirmation of the PPP’s political strength in the province.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah congratulated Mehdi on his victory, calling it a sign of public trust in the PPP. He added that under Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s leadership, the PPP continues to gain success both in parliament and among the people, setting a benchmark in popularity unmatched by any other party.
