Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif orders strict action against human trafficking

Islamabad – Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif has directed all relevant institutions to play an active role in combating human trafficking, emphasising that strict action will be taken against those involved in the heinous trade. He stated that there would be no leniency in legal proceedings against those operating human trafficking networks.

 

A review meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to assess the measures taken to combat human trafficking in the country. During the meeting, a briefing was provided on the actions taken against human traffickers. It was informed that between June 2023 and December 2024, numerous human traffickers have been arrested, and several facilitators have been dismissed from government jobs, facing disciplinary action.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted that assets worth over 500 million rupees belonging to human traffickers have been seized, with efforts to accelerate this process. The briefing also revealed that special prosecutors have been appointed to handle the prosecution of human traffickers.

In his address, the Prime Minister emphasised that all relevant authorities must carry out their responsibilities diligently and that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in this disgraceful activity, which tarnishes the country’s reputation.

The Prime Minister also directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to address the shortage of manpower immediately. He further instructed that a standardised screening system be established at airports for passengers travelling abroad. Additionally, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has been tasked with launching an effective awareness campaign regarding illegal overseas travel and human trafficking.

Prime Minister Sharif also instructed the FIA to collaborate with Interpol for the extradition of the most wanted human traffickers operating abroad.
The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for Information Ataullah Tarar, and senior officials from relevant departments.
