Punjab Government Provides Rs3B Free Treatment for Stroke Patients

LAHORE: Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique announced that the Chief Minister’s Stroke Programme will provide free treatment worth over Rs 3 billion annually. The initiative aims to help thousands of stroke patients across the province. Officials said the program represents a historic step in Punjab’s health sector. Authorities emphasized that significant progress has already been made in implementation.

During the first meeting of the Advisory Committee, the minister outlined key plans for the program. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved the establishment of a stroke management center in every district. The initiative will strengthen healthcare infrastructure. Officials said the program will ensure timely and effective care for stroke patients. The plan is expected to save many lives annually.

Furthermore, an in-principle decision will appoint a neurologist and pediatric neurologist at every District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital. The government aims to improve specialized care in all districts. A mechanism is being developed to train doctors and nurses in stroke management immediately. Officials highlighted that medical training is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment. Continuous professional development is part of the program’s design.

 Authorities plan to launch a telemedicine project. District hospital doctors will consult specialists remotely for stroke treatment. The initiative aims to reduce treatment delays. Officials said telemedicine will strengthen pre-hospital and hospital care. It will also improve coordination between hospitals and specialists.

Experts highlighted the growing risk of stroke in Punjab. Professor Qasim Bashir said one in four people over 25 is at risk. Committee members stressed that awareness, early detection, and training are essential. They emphasized care at pre-hospital, hospital, and post-hospital stages. The program aims to combine treatment, training, and awareness for better outcomes.
