Punjab Imposes Section 144 Across Province During Muharram for Security

Lahore – The Punjab government has enforced Section 144 from 1st to 10th Muharram (June 27 to July 6, 2025) across the province to maintain law and order during the sacred days of Muharram-ul-Haram.

According to the official notification issued by the Home Department, the step has been taken due to heightened security concerns. The primary aim is to ensure public safety, uphold religious harmony, and prevent any untoward incidents during the religious observance.

During this period, only pre-approved religious processions and gatherings (majalis) will be allowed. No new processes or changes in existing ones will be permitted without prior written approval from the competent authorities.

The order also strictly bans the public display of weapons and flammable materials unless officially authorised. Furthermore, any slogans, gestures, or content—verbal, written, or online—that could incite sectarian or communal hatred are strictly prohibited.

Authorities have also warned that any attempts to provoke religious or ethnic intolerance through speeches or media—including social media—will be dealt with under Section 144 provisions.

As part of the restrictions, pillion riding has also been banned across Punjab, with exemptions for women, senior citizens, and law enforcement officials.
