The Punjab government has asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for more time to hold municipal elections. This request came during a meeting between the provincial authorities and the ECP to discuss the long-delayed local government polls. Sources reveal that the Punjab government informed the commission about the challenges it faces in completing the delimitation process in the current time frame.
Initially, the ECP allowed a four-week period for the delimitation process. However, the provincial government argues this time is not enough. The Secretary for Local Government explained that Punjab is a large province, making it difficult to finalize boundaries in such a short span. Therefore, the government requested an extension of two and a half months, proposing a deadline of January 2026 for the completion of the delimitation.
In response to the delay, Provincial Minister for Local Government, Zeeshan Rafique, assured the media that the provincial administration is ready for the elections. He confirmed that all preparations have been made on their part. The only remaining step is for the ECP to finalize the delimitation before a schedule can be issued.
Previously, the Punjab government had announced that the local elections would be held within three to four months. However, due to the ongoing challenges with delimitation, the timeline has shifted. The provincial minister stated that as soon as the ECP completes the process, elections will be scheduled.
The request for more time has sparked further debate about the electoral process in Punjab. As the delay continues, many are awaiting clarity on when the elections will finally take place. The ECP’s decision on the request could determine the final timeline for local elections in the province.
