Rawal Dam
Authorities opened the spillways of Rawal Dam in Islamabad at 11:00 am on Wednesday. The dam’s water level had reached 1,750.90 feet due to heavy rainfall the night before. The move aimed to prevent overflow and manage water levels efficiently.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had already alerted relevant departments before the spillways opened. Officials warned that water could rise in Korang Nullah, which flows downstream from the dam. They advised nearby residents to remain cautious during the release.

In response, residents living close to the drain were urged to avoid the nullah area. Authorities also requested people to stay away from makeshift bridges during any sudden increase in water flow. These measures aimed to reduce the risk of accidents or loss of life.

The decision to release water was made jointly with district authorities, Rescue 1122, and the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA). Emergency teams were deployed at critical locations, including bridges and low-lying areas. Their goal was to control water flow and ensure public safety.

Rawal Dam serves as a major water source for both Islamabad and Rawalpindi. However, it also plays a vital role in managing monsoon rains. During the rainy season, its management becomes central to preventing urban flooding in the twin cities.
