On the first day of the second Test match between Pakistan and the West Indies, a remarkable record was set as 20 wickets fell in a single day.
This surpasses the previous record between these two teams, where 19 players were dismissed on the second day of the first Test of this series.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the West Indies managed to score just 163 runs in their first innings. Pakistani spinners dominated, sending seven West Indian batsmen back to the pavilion within an hour. Noman Ali was the standout performer for Pakistan, taking six wickets, including a hat-trick. This achievement made him the first Pakistani spinner to record a hat-trick in Test cricket. Before him, four Pakistani fast bowlers—Wasim Akram, Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Sami, and Naseem Shah—had achieved this feat.
In response, West Indies spinners dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup, dismissing the team for 154 runs. Mohammad Rizwan managed a notable score of 49. For the West Indies, Jomel Warrican claimed four wickets, Gudakesh Motie took three, and Kemar Roach added two to his tally.
At the end of the game on the first day, the West Indies held a slim lead of 9 runs. Notably, spinners from both sides took a combined 16 wickets during the day, setting a rare milestone. The previous record for the most wickets by spinners on the opening day of a Test was 14, achieved during a 1907 match between Australia and South Africa.
