U.S. Secretary of State urges de-escalation in call with PM Shehbaz Sharif


Islamabad: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a telephone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and discussed the current situation in South Asia on Thursday.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Rubio expressed Washington’s concern over the situation and stressed the importance of peace and stability in the region. He urged both Pakistan and India to work together to reduce tensions.
Prime Minister Sharif welcomed U.S. engagement and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to national defense. He condemned recent Indian actions as violations of Pakistan’s sovereignty and a threat to regional peace.
Sharif emphasized that the Pakistani people are angered by India’s unprovoked aggression and asserted Pakistan’s right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Both sides agreed to maintain regular communication.
