Sindh Government Imposes Province-Wide Ban on Plastic Bags

Karachi: In a significant move to combat environmental pollution, the Sindh government has announced a province-wide ban on the production, sale, and use of plastic bags, including in the metropolitan city of Karachi. The decision was formally declared through a notification issued by the Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development.
The ban, which will come into effect from June 15, covers all non-degradable, oxo-degradable, black, and recycled plastic bags. Only eco-friendly and biodegradable alternatives will be allowed in the market following the enforcement date.
Environment Secretary Agha Shah Nawaz emphasised the government’s strong stance, stating, “Polybags are a root cause of environmental destruction. This is not just an announcement—it will be strictly enforced.” He further clarified that the department will pursue a zero-tolerance policy against violators.
Authorities have confirmed that legal action will be taken against individuals or businesses found in breach of the regulation, as the government aims for full and consistent implementation across Sindh.
