Sindh High Court rules in favour of love marriages, orders protection for couples

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued a landmark verdict for three couples who married of their own free will. In a written ruling, the court emphasised that adult men and women have the fundamental right to choose their life partners, and parents cannot subject their children to harassment or violence for exercising this right.
The court directed the police and relevant authorities to ensure the safety and protection of the couple’s love marriages. This ruling comes as a significant step toward upholding individual rights and addressing issues related to forced marriages and familial pressures.
The judgement further clarified that in cases where the girl’s age is disputed, the court also reaffirmed the legal standing of adult marriage choices and the need for authorities to intervene when violence or threats arise due to such marriages.
