KARACHI— In a bid to improve road safety and maintain traffic discipline, DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah has directed strict enforcement of traffic laws across Karachi and warned of firm action against violators.

Chairing a high-level meeting on Tuesday, the DIG emphasised zero tolerance for traffic violations and issued several new directives to streamline traffic flow and ensure public safety.

As part of the new measures, the DIG ordered rigorous checking of old buses and heavy vehicles operating in the city. Motorcyclists riding without helmets will face strict action — their motorcycles will be impounded and only released after they produce helmets and valid driving licences.

He further announced a crackdown on vehicles with black tinted windows, fancy number plates, and unauthorised blue lights, stating that such violations would not be tolerated.

The DIG also instructed the immediate removal of water tankers leaking on roads and imposed a ban on nine-seat rickshaws plying certain busy routes, including Karsaz to Hasan Square, Drigh Road to Sohrab Goth, Millennium Mall to Tanyutown, and II Chundrigar Road to Tower.

To combat traffic congestion, DIG Shah warned that FIRs would be registered in cases of double or triple parking. In a move to ensure driver fitness, dope tests for suspected drug-addict drivers will be introduced soon.

Additionally, the installation of trackers and front and rear cameras has been made mandatory for all heavy vehicles. Failure to install a tracker will result in a fine of Rs 5,000, while exceeding the speed limit of 30 km/h within city limits will attract fines of Rs 2,000 for the first offence and Rs 4,000 for repeat offences.

Moreover, the entry of district buses into the city’s urban limits has been completely banned.
