In 1971, despite significant resource shortages, the Pakistani Army’s brave soldiers on the Eastern Front stood firm, prioritising the defence of their country against adversary forces. One of the key moments in this struggle occurred in Kamalpur, located in East Pakistan, where the Pakistani Army faced persistent attacks from Indian forces and their ally, the Mukti Bahini.

On July 31, 1971, India launched a fierce assault on Kamalpur’s border post, using artillery and a battalion-sized force of the Mukti Bahini. The task of defending the post fell to Lieutenant Muhammad Ali, who led the 31st Baloch Regiment, assisted by the West Pakistan Rangers and local volunteers. Although Lieutenant Ali was temporarily assigned to the 31st Baloch, his dedication to defending his homeland saw him offer his services voluntarily, despite the immense challenges faced.

At the onset of the attack, Lieutenant Muhammad Ali exhibited exceptional leadership, quickly directing his troops to take defensive positions. His calmness under pressure, strategic thinking, and courage allowed the defenders to hold off the enemy, keeping the fire under control until the right moment to strike. Once Lieutenant Ali was sure that the enemy was fully trapped, he ordered a sudden and aggressive counterattack.

Thanks to his tactical brilliance and determination, the Pakistani forces inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. Over 120 enemy soldiers were killed, and several others were wounded. The defenders also seized 14 machine guns, rocket launchers, radio transmission sets, 26 rifles, and a substantial amount of ammunition and explosives.

Lieutenant Muhammad Ali’s actions at Kamalpur represent one of the many unsung stories of heroism that are etched in the annals of history. His bravery and strategic foresight not only ensured the success of the defence but also solidified his place as a true patriot and military leader. His legacy continues to inspire future generations in Pakistan.
