Punjab Government Hikes Traffic Fines Tenfold, Cracks Down on Violations

LAHORE: In a major step toward enforcing road discipline, the Punjab government has approved a tenfold increase in traffic fines across the province. The decision came during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, focused on traffic management and safety improvements.

Under the new measures, traffic fines for speeding, signal jumping, and reckless driving will be significantly raised to deter habitual offenders. The policy also introduces strict accountability for underage drivers, with parents or guardians now facing criminal charges if their children are found behind the wheel.

CM Maryam Nawaz also directed law enforcement to file FIRs against one-wheeling and dangerous driving, emphasising zero tolerance for such life-threatening behaviours. Immediate removal of road obstructions, particularly on Bedian Road, was ordered to improve traffic flow.

To improve monitoring and transparency, all traffic challans will now be supported by video or photo evidence. Additionally, the government plans to remodel 372 traffic points across Punjab, including 77 in Lahore, to reduce congestion.

Further measures include:

  • Hefty fines for using mobile phones while driving
  • Banning of heavily loaded trailers parked on main roads
  • Crackdown on vehicles with faulty or broken headlights
  • Installation of digital roadside screens to provide real-time traffic alerts
