KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that a tropical depression over the east-central Arabian Sea has moved northeastward during the past 24 hours. It is now centered about 880 kilometers south-southeast of Karachi and 510 kilometers west-southwest of Veraval, Gujarat. The PMD’s Cyclone Warning Center in Karachi shared that the system is being closely monitored as it continues to develop.
The depression has been located near Latitude 17.00N and Longitude 67.80E, according to the PMD’s latest update. The system is expected to move north-northeastward across the east-central Arabian Sea within the next 24 hours. Although it shows gradual movement, the department stated that there is currently no threat to Pakistan’s coastal areas.
Under the influence of this weather system, light rain or drizzle may occur in parts of Tharparkar district in Sindh. The PMD advised residents to stay updated through official weather alerts. However, no major rainfall or strong winds are expected in other regions of the province at this stage.
The Cyclone Warning Center emphasized that it is maintaining constant observation of the depression’s movement. It added that sea conditions are being monitored to detect any potential changes. Fishermen have been advised to remain cautious, even though no warning has been issued yet for coastal activities.
Earlier in October, a similar low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea intensified into a depression and approached 440 kilometers south of Karachi. That system later strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm named Shakhti, which caused high waves and rough sea conditions along Sindh’s coast. The PMD continues to track the current depression to ensure timely updates and safety measures for coastal communities.
