Unexpected Snowfall Turns May Weather Wintry in Gilgit-Baltistan

CHILAS – In a rare weather twist, snowfall was reported across several high-altitude areas of Gilgit-Baltistan during the usually warm month of May, bringing back winter-like conditions to the mountainous region.

Tourists visiting Diamer and Chilas were treated to an unexpected spectacle as snowflakes began to fall, transforming the scenic landscape into a white wonderland. The sudden change in weather caused temperatures to plummet, dropping below freezing at key points including Babusar Top, Nanga Parbat, and Battugah Top.

As a result of the snowfall, the Babusar-Naran Highway has been closed for traffic. The route had only recently been reopened after a seven-month closure due to winter conditions. Similarly, the Karakoram Highway saw disruptions at the Kohistan Jajal point due to landslides triggered by the unstable weather.

Babusar Road, which connects Naran in the Kaghan Valley with Chilas in Gilgit-Baltistan, is a popular route for travellers heading to the northern areas. The road typically remains closed from November to June due to heavy snowfall.

At 13,700 feet above sea level, Babusar Top is a major attraction for tourists seeking cool weather and panoramic views. Despite the travel disruptions, visitors expressed delight at witnessing snowfall in May—a rare and memorable experience.
