The United States has announced the phased closure of its consulate in Peshawar, with diplomatic responsibilities for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa being shifted to the US Embassy in Islamabad.

According to a statement issued by the US State Department, the decision reflects concerns related to the safety of diplomatic personnel and the need for more efficient use of resources. Officials said the restructuring is part of an effort to streamline diplomatic operations while maintaining engagement with Pakistan.

Despite the closure, the United States emphasized that it will continue to maintain strong diplomatic and economic ties with Pakistan, including ongoing cooperation in areas of regional security, development, and counterterrorism.

The State Department confirmed that engagement with authorities and communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will continue through the US Embassy in Islamabad. It added that American officials will remain in contact with relevant stakeholders to advance mutual interests and support bilateral cooperation.

A spokesperson for the department said the move highlights Washington’s commitment to safeguarding its personnel while ensuring continuity in foreign policy priorities. They stressed that the United States remains committed to its long-term relationship with Pakistan.

The statement also noted that US diplomatic presence in Pakistan will continue through its missions in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. These offices will remain central to managing diplomatic, economic, and consular relations between the two countries.

Officials further clarified that the closure of the Peshawar consulate does not signal any reduction in engagement with Pakistan, but rather a realignment of resources to enhance operational efficiency and security.

The United States reaffirmed its intention to continue working with Pakistan on issues of mutual interest, including regional stability and economic cooperation, despite the change in its diplomatic footprint in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
