Karsaz Attack Remembered

KARACHI — Today marks the 18th anniversary of the Karsaz tragedy, the deadly terrorist attack during Benazir Bhutto’s homecoming procession in Karachi on October 18, 2007. The attack claimed the lives of around 180 Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) workers who had gathered to welcome their leader.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the PPP, paid tribute to the martyrs in a message commemorating the day. He said that October 18, 2007, remains etched in the nation’s memory forever. Over three million people had gathered to give a historic reception to Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and many party workers made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for democracy.

Bilawal condemned the attack, describing it as a result of a “nexus of dictatorship and terrorism” targeting the political caravan. He emphasized that the blood of the martyrs strengthened democratic ideals in Pakistan.

The PPP chairman reaffirmed his commitment to continue the mission of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, and those who lost their lives in the Karsaz attack. He expressed hope for a Pakistan built on democracy, equality, and justice, calling the martyrs’ sacrifice a guiding light toward a peaceful and prosperous future.

On that tragic day in 2007, the streets of Karachi were filled with supporters welcoming Benazir Bhutto’s return after eight years of exile. The celebrations were cut short by two explosions near the rally truck shortly after it passed a bridge on the way from the airport to Quaid-e-Azam’s tomb, resulting in a massive loss of life and injuries.

Seventeen years have passed since the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s first female prime minister and a pioneering leader in the Muslim world. Known as the “Daughter of the East,” she left an indelible mark on the country’s political history and remains a symbol of resilience and democracy.

Born into the prominent Bhutto family, Benazir was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the founder of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). She joined the party’s Central Executive Committee in 1977, under her father’s leadership, and soon began demonstrating her political acumen.
