Overcharging on Sugar

In a decisive move against profiteering, the Islamabad district administration has launched a major crackdown on shopkeepers selling sugar at inflated rates. Acting on the directives of the Deputy Commissioner (DC), 19 individuals have been arrested, and several shops sealed during surprise inspections across the city.

According to official sources, Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon directed all assistant commissioners to take immediate action against overpricing.

  • In Nilore, the Assistant Commissioner sealed 5 shops and arrested 11 shopkeepers.
  • In Sector G-13, the Assistant Commissioner (Saddar) arrested 8 shopkeepers involved in overpricing.
  • The manager of a well-known supermarket was also taken into custody for not stocking essential commodities on display counters.

DC Irfan Memon emphasised that strict enforcement of government-fixed sugar prices is essential, stating:

“Actions will be intensified against those selling sugar above the official rate. Arrests must be ensured where violations are found.”

Although the federal government has officially reduced sugar prices, many consumers are still forced to pay up to PKR 200 per kilogram, contrary to the approved rate.

This disparity between policy and practice has raised concerns among the public, prompting the administration to take swift action.

Sources confirm that daily market inspections will continue, and officials have urged citizens to report any instances of overcharging so immediate action can be taken.
