Lahore – Nawaz Sharif, president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and former prime minister, left for London on Saturday. He traveled via Qatar Airways and is expected to stay in the UK for around 15 days. Sharif will undergo routine medical examinations during his visit.
This departure comes shortly after his participation in a National Assembly session earlier in the week. He cast his vote in favor of the controversial 27th Constitutional Amendment, which was passed by the National Assembly with a two-thirds majority. The session saw high political drama, with key figures such as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, PML-N’s Nawaz Sharif, and PPP’s Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari in attendance.
Following the passage of the 27th Amendment, two senior Supreme Court judges, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah, resigned in protest. Both judges criticized the amendment, calling it an attack on Pakistan’s Constitution. Justice Shah argued that the amendment undermined justice for the common man and granted more power to the elite.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan dismissed Nawaz Sharif’s political relevance. Speaking to media in Islamabad, Khan stated that Sharif no longer holds significance in Pakistan’s political scene. He also pointed out that Sharif’s recent return to Parliament did not draw much attention, with no red carpet reception.
Nawaz Sharif’s medical trip to London comes amid a turbulent political environment, with both his health and political future under scrutiny.
