Maryam Nawaz Slams PPP Over Punjab Flood Politics

DERA GHAZI KHAN – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz strongly criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for politicizing the flood crisis in Punjab. Speaking at the launch of the electric bus project, she expressed disappointment over PPP’s behavior, despite being an ally in the federal government. Maryam said PPP’s actions during the floods were unhelpful and driven by political motives. She particularly took issue with the suggestion to seek international aid, calling it unnecessary and undignified.
Maryam Nawaz rejected PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s proposal to appeal for global assistance. Without naming him directly, she said self-respecting people do not ask the world for money. She stressed that Punjab would not beg for help and would handle its own crisis. She insisted that advice on international appeals was not needed. Her comments reflected a clear stand on provincial self-reliance in disaster recovery.
The chief minister also dismissed the Rs10,000 BISP payment as too little for flood victims. She argued that affected families need at least Rs1 million to rebuild homes and restore crops. Maryam said the BISP amount is symbolic and not practical for long-term recovery. She emphasized the importance of meaningful support over temporary handouts. Her remarks highlighted the gap between federal aid and real ground needs.
She further questioned why the National Finance Commission (NFC) funds are not being used for disaster relief. Maryam warned political allies against blaming Punjab unfairly. She firmly stated that any attack on Punjab’s integrity would not be tolerated. Her comments signaled growing tensions within the ruling coalition. She made it clear that Punjab expects respect and fair treatment in national matters.
Maryam also highlighted relief efforts and development in South Punjab. She said her government provided tents, food, and medical aid to flood-hit areas. She praised ministers for their hard work during the crisis. She rejected claims of regional neglect, promising equal development across the province. Maryam added that ration cards were being given only to deserving, hardworking families, not to those relying on passive support.
