Torkham border likely to reopen in next 24 to 48 hours

After days of tension, Torkham border is likely to reopen in the next 24 to 48 hours, as Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed in principle to reopen the crossing. According to sources, if no new issues arise, the border will be opened soon.
Earlier today, NLC officials installed a cargo scanner at the Torkham terminal for quick clearance of goods. Customs officers and staff from other departments were also urgently called to prepare for the possible reopening.

Pakistan has completed all arrangements on its side of the terminal. Afghan customs authorities also confirmed that their staff is now present at the border. The Torkham crossing was closed on the night between October 11 and 12 after unprovoked firing by Afghan forces.
According to FBR, around Rs. 850 million worth of trade passes through Torkham daily, generating about Rs. 50 million in customs duty for Pakistan. During the 9-day closure, Rs. 7.65 billion in trade was halted, and the national treasury lost Rs. 450 million in revenue.
