Punjab Suffers as Smog and Air Pollution Soar

LAHORE – With the arrival of winter, air quality has worsened across Punjab, leaving several cities shrouded in smog. Lahore has become the worst affected, with air pollution levels rising to 382 AQI, making it one of the most polluted cities in the world. Meanwhile, other major cities in Punjab, including Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan, are also experiencing hazardous air pollution. Gujranwala recorded the highest AQI at 457, followed by Faisalabad at 330 and Multan at 282.
The surge in pollution is linked to seasonal factors, including agricultural burning and low-grade diesel fumes. As temperatures drop, pollutants mix with fog, creating a dense layer of smog that affects the region’s air quality. Doctors are warning citizens of the harmful effects of smog on health. They advise wearing masks to protect against respiratory issues, eye irritation, and other health risks.
Last year, Punjab faced similar pollution problems with the onset of winter, triggering widespread health concerns. In response, the government took emergency measures to curb the situation. Efforts included closing schools, limiting business hours, and taking steps to reduce emissions. Despite these actions, the air pollution remained dangerously high, with levels in Lahore reaching up to 80 times the safe limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Authorities have been scrambling to tackle the ongoing issue, but the situation remains critical as winter progresses. Smog is a persistent problem in Punjab, driven by a combination of factors such as industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and crop-burning practices. Local authorities continue to work on solutions, but significant improvements are yet to be seen.
The government has pledged to continue its efforts to reduce smog levels and protect public health. In the meantime, experts are urging residents to take preventive measures, especially those with pre-existing health conditions. With air pollution continuing to rise, the need for long-term solutions to control smog and improve air quality in Punjab has never been more urgent.
