Saudi crown prince unveils national Red Sea sustainability strategy

RIYADH: Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman introduced the National Red Sea Sustainability Strategy on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards safeguarding one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. The initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and focuses on driving the transition to a blue economy while ensuring the long-term preservation of the Red Sea.
The strategy aims to protect the Red Sea’s environment, empower local communities, and promote sustainable practices in line with the Kingdom’s newly established national priorities for research, development, and innovation (RDI). It emphasises sustainable environmental practices, with a particular focus on addressing essential needs while fostering economic growth.
During the announcement, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman underscored Saudi Arabia’s commitment to utilising its vast economic, geographical, and cultural resources to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship. He emphasised that the strategy is crucial for integrating the blue economy into Saudi Arabia’s diversified economic framework.
“The Kingdom aims for the Red Sea region to serve as a global benchmark for leading blue economy initiatives and reaffirms its dedication to a sustainable future for the Red Sea,” the Crown Prince said, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts to protect the Red Sea coastline and support the communities dependent on it.
Spanning 186,000 square kilometres and featuring a coastline of 1,800 kilometres, the Red Sea is home to the fourth-largest barrier reef system in the world and accounts for 6.2% of the planet’s coral reefs. It is also home to numerous islands, making it one of the most biodiverse marine areas globally.
