DHAKA – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman said he faces “huge” challenges if elected prime minister this week. He spoke to AFP ahead of Thursday’s elections. Rahman vowed to repair a country he said was looted under the previous government. He emphasized his top priority would be restoring security and stability. Political turmoil has gripped Bangladesh since the 2024 youth-led uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Rahman described the country’s economy, health system, and energy sector as severely damaged under the previous regime. He accused the ousted government of neglecting ordinary citizens. Rahman said his first task would be ensuring a normal situation for public safety. He stressed the need to restore confidence among people and investors. Moreover, he warned that rebuilding the country would be a daunting task for his administration.

Despite challenges, Rahman expressed confidence in a decisive electoral victory for the BNP. He said his party expects a clear mandate from the people. Rahman indicated no coalition beyond his current alliance would be necessary. He highlighted the need to create jobs for youth, especially women. Rahman also prioritized reviving Bangladesh’s garment industry, a key economic sector.

Returning from 17 years in exile in Britain, Rahman assumed leadership of BNP from his late mother, Khaleda Zia. He acknowledged his famous parents’ legacy but promised to do better. Rahman vowed to tackle corruption, particularly in mega-projects that enriched a few at the expense of ordinary citizens. He stressed that the interests of the people must come first. Relations with neighboring India would aim for at least a friendly and stable relationship.

Finally, Rahman opposed banning political parties by law, despite Awami League being barred from the vote. He said individuals involved in crimes should face legal punishment. Rahman emphasized fair governance, economic recovery, and social stability as his top priorities. He promised to create opportunities and rebuild trust in Bangladesh’s political system. Observers say his victory could mark a major shift in the country’s leadership.
