British Columbia shooting

At least ten people were killed Tuesday in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, federal police said. Seven victims were shot at a secondary school, while two others were found dead at a nearby residence. Authorities described the situation as a rapidly evolving and dynamic incident. Twenty-seven people were injured, including two with serious injuries and 25 with non life-threatening wounds, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported.

Police said an alert was issued about an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School Tuesday afternoon. First responders quickly secured the school and found six people shot dead on site. A seventh victim died while being transported to the hospital. Authorities also identified a secondary location, a residence, where two additional victims were found deceased.

The RCMP said an individual believed responsible for the killings was found deceased with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury. Canadian media reported that the shooter may have been female, but officials provided no confirmation. Police stressed that the investigation is ongoing and details about the suspect remain limited.

RCMP Northern District Commander Ken Floyd praised the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the local community. He said this cooperation played a critical role in managing the emergency. Floyd also acknowledged the emotional toll on the community, describing it as an incredibly difficult day for Tumbler Ridge residents.

Tumbler Ridge is located more than 1,100 kilometers (680 miles) north of Vancouver, British Columbia’s largest city. Authorities continue to investigate the motives behind the shooting. Police have asked anyone with information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
