South Africa training camp

A group of 30 England women’s cricket players will travel to South Africa to prepare for the home T20 World Cup later this year. Plans to go to Abu Dhabi were scrapped due to ongoing conflict in the region. The players will split into two squads of 15 for a five-game intra-squad series. This series will run in Pretoria from March 10 to 27. It gives all players a chance to stake their claim for World Cup selection.

The squads are named Team Brittin and Team Heyhoe-Flint, honoring former World Cup-winning players Jan Brittin and Rachael Heyhoe-Flint. Nat Sciver-Brunt, England captain, will lead Team Brittin. Charlie Dean, vice-captain, will lead Team Heyhoe-Flint. Coaches Jon Lewis and Luke Williams, both England Women assistant coaches, will guide the squads. Head coach Charlotte Edwards will oversee both groups. She emphasized the importance of using the series to challenge all players under competitive conditions.

Eight players on the tour are yet to make a senior appearance for England. Among them is 19-year-old opener Davina Perrin, who impressed with a 43-ball century in last year’s Hundred. Other newcomers include spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman, Grace Scrivens, Alexa Stonehouse, Grace Potts, and Jodi Grewcock. Experienced players like Ellie Threlkeld and Rhianna Southby will also join. Regular leg-spinner Sarah Glenn misses the tour due to a finger fracture.

This is England’s second South Africa training camp this year. Earlier trips focused on skills in Oman and Stellenbosch. Edwards said this block will include a more competitive element. She hopes this helps players adapt to high-pressure match situations. The training forms part of preparation for the upcoming international season. England will host New Zealand and India in white-ball series before the T20 World Cup. They will then play India in the first women’s Test at Lord’s.

Team Heyhoe-Flint includes players such as Tammy Beaumont, Sophie Ecclestone, Heather Knight, and Mahika Gaur. Team Brittin features Nat Sciver-Brunt, Lauren Bell, Sophia Dunkley, and Alice Capsey. Each squad blends experienced internationals and talented newcomers. The series allows selectors to evaluate performance under competitive conditions. Officials aim to finalize the strongest possible squad for the T20 World Cup. Overall, the tour marks a crucial step in England Women’s World Cup preparations.
