NEW YORK – The UN Security Council on Wednesday called on Iran to immediately stop attacks on Gulf states. The resolution did not mention US or Israeli strikes on Iran.

The resolution, passed by 13 votes with two abstentions, demands Iran halt attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Jordan.

It also condemns any threats or actions by Iran to obstruct international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The measure stresses global maritime security.

Bahrain’s UN ambassador, Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, said the vote reflects the Gulf’s importance to the global economy. He emphasized regional security is an international responsibility.

China and Russia abstained, criticizing the resolution for ignoring US and Israeli actions against Iran. Their abstentions highlighted divisions among Security Council veto-holders.

Iranian ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani called the resolution a “blatant misuse” of the UN mandate. He described it as an injustice against Iran, the main victim.

The United States supported the resolution. US ambassador Mike Waltz said the vote shows a broad condemnation of Iran’s attempts to destabilize the region.
