Punjab minorities protection bill

To defend the rights of minority groups, a new measure has been submitted in the Punjab Assembly. This measure aims to make it illegal to coerce someone into changing their religion or getting married.

Falbous Christopher, the head of the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Minorities Affairs, introduced the Punjab Protection of Minorities Rights Bill 2026. A member introduced this bill, which is expected to spark a lot of debate regarding safeguarding minority groups in the province.

Those who coerce others into changing their religion will face consequences if this bill is passed into law.

They could go to jail for up to five years. Have to pay a fine. The bill also wants to take action against people who force members of minority groups to get married.

The bill says that minority citizens should have rights. It wants to stop people from being treated when it comes to education and jobs. It also wants to protect places where people worship and make sure that school books do not teach hate or bias against minority groups.

This bill is being introduced at a time when people’re worried about the rights and safety of minority groups in Pakistan. There have been cases of people being forced to change their religion or get married and these cases have gotten a lot of attention.

Something else that happened recently is that the Federal Constitutional Court made a decision about a woman who had changed her religion to Islam. The court said that her marriage was valid even though her father said that she had been taken away against her will. The court decided that the woman was an adult and had gotten married willingly.

The introduction of this bill shows that the lawmakers are trying again to deal with issues like religious freedom and protecting minority groups. However the bill will only become a law if it gets support from most of the members of the assembly. The Punjab Protection of Minorities Rights Bill 2026 is a step, towards protecting the rights of minority groups.
