South Korea France strategic partnership

South Korea and France are set to elevate their bilateral relations to a “global strategic partnership” as President Lee Jae Myung hosts French President Emmanuel Macron in Seoul during a two-day state visit.

According to South Korea’s presidential office, the leaders will hold a summit aimed at strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, technology, and security. The visit marks the first time a French president has travelled to South Korea on a state visit since 2015, reflecting renewed diplomatic engagement amid growing global tensions.

Officials from both countries have indicated that the ongoing Middle East crisis will be a central topic of discussion, particularly due to its impact on global energy markets. South Korea, like many Asian economies, depends heavily on energy imports passing through the Strait of Hormuz, where disruptions have led to rising oil prices and economic uncertainty.

France is reportedly seeking South Korea’s support for a maritime security initiative aimed at ensuring safe navigation in the strategic waterway. However, President Macron has cautioned against direct military intervention, stating that forcing open the strait through military means would not be a realistic solution.

Beyond security issues, the visit also focuses on enhancing economic cooperation. Macron is expected to meet leading South Korean business executives, including representatives from major corporations such as Samsung, Naver, and Hyundai Motor, to boost trade and investment opportunities.

The two leaders will also discuss collaboration in emerging fields like artificial intelligence and nuclear energy, which are considered key areas for future innovation and growth.

Cultural diplomacy has also been highlighted during the visit, with high-profile events featuring K-pop artists and prominent chefs symbolising the strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Trade between the two countries remains significant, with South Korean exports to France reaching $6.4 billion in 2025, while imports stood at $8.6 billion.
