Shehbaz Sharif has directed Pakistan Railways to maintain current ticket prices despite increasing diesel costs, offering relief to passengers and businesses amid rising expenses.

Under the decision, the government will absorb an estimated Rs 6 billion in additional costs until June 30 to ensure that fares remain unchanged. Officials said the move comes at a time when a significant fare increase had been under consideration due to mounting operational pressures.

A spokesperson for Pakistan Railways confirmed that the administration had evaluated a possible 30 percent fare hike to offset fuel costs. However, the government ultimately decided to bear the financial burden itself to protect passengers from higher travel expenses.

The directive applies to all travel categories, including economy and air-conditioned classes. In addition, freight charges will also remain stable, a step aimed at supporting businesses that rely on rail transport for goods movement.

Hanif Abbasi welcomed the decision, describing it as a measure that brings ease to the public during challenging economic conditions. He said maintaining fare stability would help ensure that rail travel remains accessible while also benefiting the commercial sector.

Officials noted that rising diesel prices have placed pressure on transport systems nationwide, making cost management increasingly difficult. By absorbing the impact, the government aims to maintain service continuity without transferring the burden to passengers.

The initiative reflects broader efforts to provide economic relief while balancing operational demands. Observers say such measures may help sustain public confidence in rail services and support affordability during a period of financial strain.
