Police have arrested two suspects, including a lecturer, in connection with the suicide of medical student Fahmeeda Laghari, as investigations into alleged harassment at a private medical university in Mirpurkhas continue to intensify.

Senior Superintendent of Police Mirpurkhas Fida Hussain confirmed on Monday that one of the main suspects, Abid Laghari, has been sent on a four-day physical remand. Authorities said a total of five individuals, including the principal of the Ibn-e-Sina medical university (Muhammad Medical College), have been nominated in the case.

Police officials stated that raids are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects, including the university principal and three others who are currently absconding. One additional student accused in the case has also been arrested, while efforts are underway to detain another.

According to the FIR filed by the victim’s uncle, Fahmeeda Laghari had repeatedly complained of harassment and blackmail by a lecturer and two students, who allegedly pressured her for inappropriate relations and academic favours. Despite raising concerns with the university administration, no effective action was taken, the complaint alleges.

Investigators further noted that the pistol used in the incident belonged to the victim’s father. The case has sparked widespread concern over campus safety and institutional accountability.

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has expressed deep sorrow over the incident and called for a transparent investigation. PM&DC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj stressed that all medical institutions must ensure functional anti-harassment committees and provide a safe learning environment for students.

He added that failure to comply with these regulations would result in strict disciplinary action. The council has sought a full report on the incident, including findings from institutional and government inquiries.

The case has renewed debate over harassment in educational institutions and the effectiveness of complaint mechanisms meant to protect students.
