Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited has announced scheduled maintenance on a key international submarine cable, warning users across Pakistan of potential internet disruptions and slower connectivity during the process.

According to the company, maintenance work on the SMW4 submarine cable system will take place from April 14 to April 20. The cable, managed by a global consortium, is a critical component of Pakistan’s international internet connectivity.

PTCL stated that users may experience intermittent service outages and reduced speeds, particularly during evening hours when internet usage is typically at its peak. The company advised users to expect temporary disruptions as repair and maintenance work continues on the undersea network.

Although PTCL recently completed repair work on a repeater installed in the cable system and restored operations, some areas — especially Karachi — are still experiencing sluggish internet performance. Users have reported difficulties in uploading and downloading content, particularly on social media platforms, despite assurances that connectivity has been restored.

The development highlights Pakistan’s heavy reliance on submarine cables for international bandwidth, making such maintenance operations highly impactful on nationwide connectivity.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is working to improve long-term connectivity by introducing Fixed Satellite Services (FSS). The initiative aims to attract global providers such as Starlink and Shanghai SpaceCom to offer satellite-based internet services, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

Under the proposed framework, companies will be granted 15-year licences to establish ground stations and satellite terminals, with rollout required within 18 months.

The move is seen as part of broader efforts to diversify Pakistan’s internet infrastructure and reduce dependence on submarine cable systems vulnerable to disruptions.
