The first phase of talks between Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has concluded in Tehran, with a detailed and more substantive round of discussions scheduled for Thursday, according to officials involved in the process.

A Pakistani delegation led by Field Marshal Asim Munir, alongside Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and other senior officials, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran. Upon arrival, Munir was received by Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi, highlighting the high-level nature of the engagement amid heightened regional tensions.

According to Al Jazeera, discussions are focused in part on Iran’s nuclear programme, with early indications suggesting that a breakthrough, while not guaranteed, remains possible if current diplomatic momentum continues. The talks come after previous rounds of US-Iran negotiations failed to produce a concrete agreement.

Pakistan has increasingly positioned itself as a facilitator in backchannel diplomacy, seeking to reduce tensions and encourage a negotiated settlement between the two sides. Officials say Islamabad has maintained continuous communication with both Washington and Tehran as part of its mediation role.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed that indirect exchanges with the United States have continued through Pakistan following the unsuccessful weekend negotiations. He noted that multiple messages have been transmitted since Iranian officials returned to Tehran.

The latest round of diplomacy follows a fragile ceasefire arrangement and extended negotiations that reportedly lasted over 20 hours but ended without agreement. Despite the setback, both sides have continued to explore potential pathways for renewed dialogue.

While no formal breakthrough has been announced, diplomatic sources suggest that sustained engagement through Pakistani channels could help narrow differences on key issues, including nuclear restrictions and broader regional security concerns.

The outcome of Thursday’s detailed talks is expected to determine whether the mediation effort can advance toward a more structured negotiation framework between Washington and Tehran.
