FIFA has clarified that Iran will participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026, dismissing speculation about replacing the team with Italy.

The uncertainty had emerged amid rising geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, which sparked debate within sporting circles about potential changes to the tournament lineup.

According to international media reports, there were suggestions that Italy could be included in place of Iran. However, FIFA officials quickly rejected the idea, emphasizing that qualification for the World Cup is strictly based on sporting merit.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino reaffirmed that Iran earned its place through performance and would not be excluded under any circumstances. He stressed that political considerations would not influence tournament participation.

The proposal to replace Iran was reportedly floated by a US official, but it failed to gain any traction or official backing. Iran’s diplomatic representatives also strongly criticized the suggestion, describing it as a politically motivated move that undermines the integrity of international sport.

Meanwhile, Italian authorities supported FIFA’s stance, reiterating that World Cup qualification depends solely on results on the field. Italy has failed to qualify for the tournament for the third consecutive time, further reinforcing the argument against any replacement.

The confirmation from FIFA brings clarity to the situation and ensures that the tournament lineup remains unchanged. It also highlights the organization’s commitment to maintaining fairness and independence in global football, despite external political pressures.

With the issue settled, attention is expected to shift back to preparations for the 2026 World Cup, as qualified teams continue to focus on their performance on the global stage.
