A power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station has raised concerns about further disruption to water supply in Karachi, according to officials from the Karachi Water Corporation.

A spokesperson for the water authority said the breakdown affected the pumping system, while back pressure also reportedly damaged two major water supply lines. This has increased the risk of interruptions in water distribution across several parts of the city.

Officials warned that the situation could worsen an already strained water supply system, as Karachi has been facing shortages due to ongoing maintenance work. Meanwhile, K-Electric stated that the disruption was caused by a fault in the main power cable at the Dhabeji pumping station. Despite the fault, electricity supply to 18 out of 22 pumping motors remained operational.

The power utility added that alternative arrangements were made to ensure electricity supply to the remaining four motors as well, in an effort to prevent a complete shutdown of the pumping system.

The development comes at a time when the Karachi Water Corporation had already shut down seven pumps for 48 hours starting April 25 to connect a new water line to the network. Additionally, two pumps have been out of service for a week due to maintenance work.

Experts say that if the current power issue is not resolved quickly, it could lead to a severe water shortage in multiple areas of the city, further compounding difficulties for residents.
