A case of alleged medical negligence has surfaced at the Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology after surgical scissors were reportedly left inside a patient’s body during open-heart surgery.

According to hospital officials, the incident involved a 22-year-old patient named Saqlain, a resident of Toba Tek Singh, who underwent heart surgery at the institute. The issue came to light after the patient continued to suffer severe pain and complications following the procedure.

Medical Superintendent Dr Nadeem confirmed that the scissors had accidentally been left inside the patient’s chest during the operation due to negligence by the nursing staff. He said the patient endured pain for nearly three weeks before doctors conducted another surgery to remove the instrument.

The hospital administration launched an inquiry into the incident, which reportedly found that the staff nurses responsible failed to complete the mandatory counting of surgical instruments after the operation. Officials described the lapse as a serious violation of medical safety procedures.

Following the investigation, the services of the two staff nurses involved have reportedly been withdrawn from the hospital. The administration has also sent a formal report to the provincial health secretary for further disciplinary action.

Hospital authorities stated that standard operating procedures require all surgical instruments to be carefully counted before and after every operation to avoid such incidents. The case has sparked concern over patient safety and medical oversight in public healthcare facilities.

Medical negligence incidents continue to raise questions regarding hospital management, staff training and implementation of safety protocols in Pakistan’s healthcare sector. Officials said further action would be taken after the completion of departmental proceedings against those found responsible.
