weight loss drugs

A new scientific review has revealed that patients using weight-loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy often regain weight after discontinuing the drugs.

Published in the journal BMC Medicine, the study analysed data from 11 previous clinical trials involving around 2,500 participants. The findings indicate a clear trend of weight regain once the treatment ends.

Ozempic and Wegovy contain the active ingredient semaglutide, one of six FDA-approved medications used to treat obesity in older adults. These include:

  • Orlistat
  • Naltrexone-Bupropion
  • Semaglutide
  • Liraglutide
  • Tirzepatide
  • Phentermine-Topiramate

Out of the 11 trials reviewed, six focused on semaglutide, showing that while the drug is effective during use, its benefits may not last without ongoing treatment.

Experts now emphasise the importance of long-term obesity management, suggesting that weight-loss medications should be part of a broader lifestyle and medical strategy, not a standalone solution. The findings raise critical questions about how best to support patients once drug therapy ends.
