Aid Boat ‘Handala’ Sets Sail from Italy to Gaza in Support of Palestinians

In a powerful display of solidarity with Palestinians, a humanitarian aid boat named “Handala” has departed from the Italian port city of Syracuse toward Gaza. Onboard are around 15 international activists carrying medical supplies, food, children’s items, and humanitarian aid.

The mission is part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an international effort aimed at breaking the Israeli blockade of Gaza and raising global awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

Before departure, supporters at the port waved Palestinian flags and chanted “Free Palestine” to show their backing for the mission. The boat is expected to sail for a week across the Mediterranean, covering approximately 1,800 kilometres, with a scheduled stop in Gallipoli, Italy, where two more members from the French group France On Board will join.

This voyage follows the attempted mission of the “Medelin” boat six weeks ago, which was intercepted by Israeli forces before reaching Gaza. Among those on board that mission was renowned climate activist Greta Thunberg, who, along with others, was deported.

French MP Gabriel Cathala, speaking before departure, stated:

“This mission is for the children of Gaza. It’s about breaking the silence. If we are blocked, it will be yet another violation of international law by Israel.”

According to the United Nations, the ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 57,800 Palestinians, the majority of them civilians.
