Australian police announced plans to increase security at the Sydney Cricket Ground for the fifth Ashes Test starting Sunday. The decision comes weeks after a deadly attack at a Hanukkah celebration killed 15 people at Bondi Beach. The father-and-son shooters carried out the attack on December 14. Authorities called it Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly three decades. The tragedy shocked the nation and raised fears of rising antisemitism.

New South Wales Police said the cricket match will feature a “high-visibility” presence to reassure the public. Riot patrol units, mounted officers, and personnel carrying rifles will be deployed. The cricket ground is about 5 kilometers from Bondi Beach. Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the stronger presence and long arms aim to make spectators feel safe. Officials expect a full crowd for the opening day of the final Test.

Cricket Australia confirmed it will honour first responders and community members who acted bravely during the Bondi attack. A guard of honour will be formed on the field. The crowd will applaud emergency response agencies and members of the public. Authorities said these gestures aim to show respect and recognition for courageous actions. The announcement reinforces both security and community solidarity ahead of the match.

Authorities have already increased policing across Sydney in response to the tragedy. Around 3,000 police officers, some armed, patrolled New Year celebrations earlier this week. Several events at Bondi were cancelled, and Christmas celebrations were subdued. Officials believe the attack was inspired by the Islamic State. These measures demonstrate ongoing vigilance against threats in public spaces.

The Ashes Test marks a rare occasion where security is visibly heightened at a major sporting event. Police emphasized their goal is public reassurance rather than alarm. Commissioner Lanyon explained that officers carrying rifles might appear unusual but are necessary. The series continues with Australia already leading and aiming to finish the five-Test series successfully. Fans and authorities remain focused on safety, celebration, and remembrance.
