BEIJING – A tragic bridge collapse at a tourist destination in China’s Xinjiang region has left five people dead and 24 injured. The incident occurred when the bridge’s support cables broke, causing the structure to tilt and give way. At the time, 29 people were on the bridge and fell as it collapsed.

Following the incident, emergency teams quickly launched a rescue operation. Authorities confirmed that all injured individuals were taken to hospital for treatment. In the meantime, the tourist site has been temporarily closed to ensure safety and begin repairs. Officials have also started a detailed investigation into the cause of the collapse.

The location, known as Xiata, spans 65 square kilometres and is famous for its scenic views. The area features a mountain range, a flowing river, lush valleys, and ancient ruins. It attracts both local and international tourists looking to explore natural and cultural landmarks.

Officials said rescue work is still ongoing while safety teams assess the condition of other nearby structures. The government has assured the public that strict safety checks will be carried out at similar tourist spots. The accident has raised concerns about infrastructure safety at natural heritage sites.

Just weeks earlier, a similar incident occurred in Guizhou province. Strong winds overturned four tourist boats in Bijie City, leaving 10 dead and 70 injured. These back-to-back tragedies have highlighted the urgent need for stronger safety protocols in China’s tourism sector.
