(Web Desk) – China and Pakistan are working closely to accelerate the completion of major infrastructure projects, including the Karakoram Highway (KKH) and the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway, under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), according to Chinese Consul General Yang Yundong.

Speaking at a press briefing on the ‘Two Sessions for 2025,’ Yang emphasized the strategic importance of these projects, which are considered vital for Pakistan’s economic growth. Last year, China committed to supporting Pakistan in completing four key transport projects: ML-1, M-6, M-9, and the second phase of the KKH.

He also highlighted ongoing developments in Gwadar, including the construction of the new international airport and efforts to increase trade through Gwadar Port. Yang noted that China’s economy continues to grow steadily, with a projected GDP increase of 5% in 2025, and reaffirmed China’s dedication to global economic cooperation through the Belt and Road Initiative.

Marking key milestones, Yang pointed out that 2025 is the 10th anniversary of President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan, while 2026 will celebrate 75 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations. He urged both countries to enhance communication, strengthen CPEC initiatives, and work towards shared modernization and economic stability.

ML-1, which connects Karachi to Peshawar, remains a top priority for both governments. While China and Pakistan reaffirmed their commitment to upgrading the railway in October 2024, Pakistan’s Railways Minister recently stated that the government might consider self-financing the project if international partners do not step forward. A high-level Chinese technical delegation is expected to visit Pakistan by the end of March to discuss the next steps in ML-1’s development.
