Depression Over Arabian Sea Moves

Karachi: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has reported that a depression over the southeast Arabian Sea has moved slowly in a north-northeast direction during the past 24 hours.

According to the PMD’s Cyclone Warning Center in Karachi, the system was centered near Latitude 9.7°N and Longitude 67.7°E, approximately 1,690 kilometers south-southeast of Karachi and 570 kilometers west-southwest of Lakshadweep (India).

The weather system is expected to continue moving northeastward over the next 24 hours, the alert added.

The PMD confirmed that there is currently no threat to Pakistan’s coastal areas, but the situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be shared with concerned authorities.

Earlier, the low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea intensified into a depression from its previous position near Latitude 8.6°N and Longitude 67.6°E, about 1,800 kilometers southeast of Karachi.

In early October, a similar low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea developed into the severe cyclonic storm “Shakhti”, which caused rough sea conditions and high waves along Sindh’s coast before moving away.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasted thundershowers in Karachi over the next 24 hours. This comes as a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea has intensified into a Depression. While most of Sindh will remain hot and dry, Karachi, Badin, Sujawal, and Thatta expect partly cloudy skies with chances of rain and wind. The PMD also warned of rough sea conditions along Sindh’s coastal belt. Overall, the weather will mostly stay hot and dry across Sindh.

The Depression is located 440 kilometers south of Karachi over the Arabian Sea. The Met Office predicted high waves and rough weather in the sea. Winds are expected to blow between 45 and 55 kilometers per hour. Due to these conditions, fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into deep sea waters until October 3. Local officials in Sindh have also been directed to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
