Electricity Prices Likely to Drop Across Pakistan Next Month

Consumers across Pakistan may soon get relief from high electricity bills. The government is considering reducing power tariffs starting next month. This news comes as inflation continues to pressure households nationwide. Officials say a final decision will follow a regulatory review.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a formal request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). The CPPA asked for a decrease of Rs. 1.75 per unit in electricity rates. This request was made under the fourth-quarter adjustment for fiscal year 2024-25.
NEPRA is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the request today. After reviewing all details, it will issue a final verdict. If NEPRA approves the proposal, electricity users across the country will benefit from lower bills. The estimated relief will total more than Rs. 53.39 billion.
This quarterly adjustment, if accepted, will apply to all state-run power distribution companies, including K-Electric. The relief could grow further if NEPRA also approves adjustments for September, October, and November. That would increase the rate cut to Rs. 2.10 per unit.
For now, the proposed reduction of Rs. 1.75 per unit is focused on August, September, and October. This cut will help reduce monthly electricity expenses for millions of households. People hope this will ease financial burdens during a time of rising costs.
NEPRA will make an official announcement after the hearing. If approved, the lower rates will offer much-needed relief to citizens.
