EU labels Iran Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organisation

BRUSSELS – The European Union on Thursday designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation over deadly protests.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said the move was “long overdue” and described the regime as crushing protests in blood.
The largely symbolic decision drew a warning from Tehran, which claimed the action could have “destructive consequences” for relations.
The EU also imposed visa bans and asset freezes on 21 Iranian officials and state entities, including top IRGC commanders.

Human rights groups report thousands of protesters were killed by security forces, including the IRGC, while Iran claims most victims were security personnel.
France and Italy shifted their positions to support the move, and Israel called it a “historic decision,” echoing US, Canada, and Australia.
EU officials said sanctions on the IRGC already exist, so the new listing is largely symbolic but sends a strong political message.
