How many lakhs does every citizen of Pakistan owe?

ISLAMABAD: Every citizen of Pakistan is now burdened with over Rs. 307,000 in debt, according to the latest State Bank of Pakistan report. The federal government’s total debt has surged to Rs. 76.045 trillion.

In the past year alone, the debt increased by Rs. 8.312 trillion. Experts warn that growing debt leads to rising inflation, erodes economic stability, and undermines national sovereignty.

Earlier, the Ministry of Finance revealed that the National Highway Authority (NHA) is the top loss-making institution, with total losses exceeding Rs. 1,953 billion.

Other government entities like QESCO, PESCO, SEPCO, PTCL, and Pakistan Steel Mills also reported severe financial losses. The IMF has emphasised the need for urgent reforms, privatisation, and professional management to avoid further economic decline.
