Islamabad: As the term of Pakistan’s Chief Election Commissioner, Sikandar Sultan Raja, nears its end, the federal government has reportedly started preparing to appoint a new head of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, who retired on October 25, is among the top contenders for this prestigious constitutional position.

According to media reports, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja is set to retire at the end of January next year, leaving a significant vacancy. As the deadline approaches, the government has initiated discussions and internal consultations to select his successor. With just over two months remaining, this strategic appointment is seen as highly consequential, given the importance of the Election Commission in overseeing Pakistan’s electoral process.

Former Chief Justice Isa is being considered alongside other retired judges, as per sources close to the government. Known for his integrity and independent stance on various judicial matters, Isa’s potential appointment as Chief Election Commissioner has drawn attention and sparked discussions among political analysts and citizens alike.

This appointment will not only shape the Election Commission’s leadership but also set the tone for the commission’s approach in future elections, especially given Pakistan’s current political landscape.
